What Does My Child Need to Know Before Kindergarten?
Kindergarten is a big, beautiful step in any child’s life—and we can do our best to help them make that step by ensuring they have the knowledge and skills that will help them be successful. Want to know specifics? Read on for what your child should know before school starts.
Holding a pencil, marker, or crayon. Being able to hold and use a writing utensil is a huge help in Kindergarten. Ensure your child has the correct fine motor skillset by taking time to color, paint, and do fun games like mazes.
Writing their first name. Your child will be well-prepared if they are able to write their first name on their school assignments—as well as feel pride, a sense of self, and a greater value of self!
Naming colors. This step may seem almost -too- basic, but it’s a big one—knowing colors can allow students to follow simple directions, such as “sit on the yellow rug” or “use the blue marker.”
Sharing and turn-taking. The academic side comes more easily if the child is more prepared socially, causing fewer problems. Having a friend, or many friends, can enable the child to have the confidence and belonging they will need to attempt their schoolwork to the best of their ability.
Clean up after themselves. Having a willingness to help keep the classroom clean is an attribute of a successful student. When they clean up after themselves, they are able to establish a good, trusting relationship with their teachers and fellow students on the basis of shared responsibility and helping one another.
Kindergarten is easier if your child is prepared. We can help! Our school teaches many of the above skills and we would be more than happy to love your child through the start of their learning life. These years are incredibly important—use them well and wisely to teach your child the skills they will need to be successful in the future.
