Grandparents play an important role in the growth and development in the life of a preschooler. There are many special elements a grandparent can provide in ways no one else can. Their contribution will be a delightful extension of what the parents provide.
Belonging
Grandparents can provide a sense of belonging for a preschooler. Many grandparents have the opportunity to fill in gaps between preschool and working parents. It is important for a preschooler’s wellbeing to not have to think or worry about who will be providing care.
Calm
Grandparents also bring calmness. Grandparents are able to be involved without needing to be one who disciplines. Without fear of correction, this may provide an environment that fosters openness and problem solving for situations. The Impact of Grandparenting on the Well Being of Children, states, “time spent with grandparents as being a calm time, in which few demands were made of them [grandchildren] and they were able to relax precisely because their grandparents were calm.”
Wisdom
Grandparents bring a wealth of wisdom and instruction. Grandparents have skills they have mastered through years of living. It is common for a grandparent to pursue teaching grandchildren different skills they possess. Often the time they spend teaching preschoolers is done with much patience and care. Not only do grandparents share instruction, but they also share wisdom with life skills. Whether it is kindness, basic interaction skills with neighbors or even being charitable, grandparents have had decades of training waiting to be tapped into.
Spanning the Gap
In our technologically advanced society, it is still possible for even geographically distanced grandparents to be actively involved in a preschooler’s life and make substantial investments. Video chatting can be used to read books, share stories, and invest in the daily or weekly doings of a preschooler’s life among many other options. All grandparents can play a pivotal role in the development of a preschooler. Their unique contribution is difficult for anyone else to fulfill.
Nobody can do for little children what grandparents do. Grandparents sort of sprinkle stardust over the lives of little children. – Alex Haley
