Back-to-School Preschool Routines

Back-to-School Preschool Routines at Kids 'R' Kids Fort Mill, preschool, daycare, childcare

Adjusting to preschool can be difficult for your little one. Luckily, getting into a set routine will help ease them into a successful year as a first-time preschooler

Start Early

Most families get off their normal routines during the summer months and that is totally fine.  However, we all know preschoolers do best when on a routine.  At least two weeks prior to their first day of preschool, start getting back into the routine of going to bed earlier and waking earlier.  Choose a bedtime that allows your preschooler to get ample sleep and awake time that allows her to get ready in the morning and eat breakfast without feeling rushed.

Utilize Your Nights

Create an evening routine in which your preschooler helps prepare for the upcoming school day.  Your preschooler can help pack his lunch box and choose which weather appropriate clothes to set out to wear for the next day.  Helping pack his backpack the night before is a helpful way to prepare for the upcoming day.

End the evening routine with a calm and relaxing bedtime routine.  This may include a bath and a healthy snack.  Be sure to include some wind down time where your preschooler has a chance to talk to you about any feelings or anxieties he is having about the next day.  This is especially important the night before the first day of preschool.  Finish off the bedtime routine with a story or two and bedtime kisses.

Don’t Rush

Mornings are rushed for a lot of families, so allow plenty of time for those mishaps or for your preschooler to wake up grumpy.  A morning routine needs to be calm so your preschooler doesn’t start his day off stressed because of the hectic morning.  A healthy breakfast is a must in the morning routine!  Ideally, eat breakfast with your preschooler.  If that is not possible, talk to him while he is eating and you finish preparing for the day.

Back-to-preschool time does not have to be stress filled and can be accomplished without a tearful and anxious preschooler.  Through a little preparation and a good routine, you can be confident your preschooler will have a  smooth transition back into preschool.
