Fun Math Activities for Preschoolers

Fun Math Activities for Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Fort Mill, preschool, daycare, childcare

Math is a fundamental part of everyday life. Number recognition and counting are important concepts for preschoolers and foundational math skills. Since young children learn best through hands-on activities, here are a couple of fun math activities to practice with numbers.

Numbers Target Practice

Materials Needed: sidewalk chalk and filled water balloons

Draw a large target (circle with four rings, with each ring getting smaller towards the center) using the sidewalk chalk. Then add a few numbers in each ring. For younger children, start with the numbers 1-10. For a tougher challenge, add 2-digit numbers. There are two ways to play. For the first way, the adult calls out a number and the child throws water balloons at the number until it is erased by the water. The second way to play is for the child to throw a balloon at a number and then call out the number he or she hits.

Counting Fruit Snacks

Materials Needed: several packages of fruit snacks and dice

For a quick and simple math activity at snack time, open several packages of fruit snacks and make a pile in front of the preschooler. Have the child roll a die and count out that many fruit snacks before eating them. To make the snacks last longer, have them roll two dice and count out the number of fruit snacks for each dice. Practice adding or subtracting the numbers on the dice. After each correct answer, the child can eat a fruit snack. Repeat several times. Obviously, any small food item will work in place of the fruit snacks. For example, Cheerios or grapes could be used instead.

Not every learning activity requires a lot of planning or fancy art supplies. Simply tracing numbers with markers or finger paint can help children practice number recognition. Playing “I Spy” with numbers while standing in line at the grocery store or sitting in a waiting room is a fun way to sneak in some number practice and do something engaging while passing the time. Parents can easily incorporate math concepts into everyday life!
