Black History Month Resources for Preschoolers

Black History Month Resources for Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Fort Mill, preschool, daycare, childcare

February is Black History Month! Since reading is such a great way to show young children some examples of African American people that made a difference, preschool parents may find themselves looking for books geared towards children five years old and younger. Here are a few recommendations.

Dream Big, Little One and Follow Your Dreams, Little One

By Vashti Harrison

Dream Big, Little One is based on black women, and Follow Your Dreams, Little One is centered on black men. These board books are a great way to familiarize young children with prominent African Americans. These books feature famous creators, athletes, heroes, and every day role models.

Little People, Big Dreams: Harriet Tubman

By Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara

Minty, who later became Harriet Tubman, was born a slave in Maryland. Harriet was able to escape slavery, and then made it her mission to help other slaves in the South gain their freedom too. The book includes wonderful illustrations, a timeline, and historical photos. Parents will want to check out the other books in the Little People, Big Dreams series.

We Shall Overcome: The Story of a Song

By Debbie Levy

Beginning in slavery times, this story about a song moves through the history of slavery, segregation, and the Civil Rights Movement up to present day. The song brought together a group of people who courageously fought to overcome the inequalities they faced. This picture book is a great way to sequence major events of black history.

Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices

A Netflix Series

Stories help children make sense of the world around them. In this series, celebrities read picture books by black authors in an engaging way. Each episode is about five minutes long and was made with the preschooler in mind. Parents can use the episodes to help create meaningful conversations at home.

The books listed here are only a small portion of the books for young children concerning Black History and famous African Americans. Hopefully, the ones listed here will inspire families to find a new book to read this month!
