Pets for Preschoolers

Pets for Preschoolers

Pets are a fun way for preschoolers to have some responsibility and create special memories! There are many different pets, each with their own pros and cons. Check out our list of the best pets for preschoolers!

Fish

Fish are a common first pet for children. They are very low maintenance, requiring only feeding them and cleaning their bowl. Your child will like picking out a fish and will also enjoy watching them swim around the bowl! Another fun activity for children with fish is decorating the bowl with rocks, plants, and fun toys.

Hamsters, Guinea Pigs, & Gerbils

These small mammals make great pets for preschoolers! Care is simple and they only need a small amount of space to live. This type of pet offers more interaction than fish. Hamster balls and wheels will mesmerize your child and keep your child entertained for hours.

Cats

A small kitten or gentle cat is an adorable pet for preschoolers! Cats are independent animals, requiring less attention than dogs, but still needing enough attention for your child to have some responsibility. In addition, cats make great snuggle buddies for your children.

Dogs

One of the most popular family pets is a dog! Most of us have memories with the family dog from when we were growing up. Definitely the highest maintenance of the pet options, requiring walks in addition to feeding and grooming, dogs become a part of the family quickly! Your child will spend endless hours playing with a dog and create memories with them for many years.

The most important thing when selecting a pet is to pick one that is a good fit for your family! Your child will love any animal you choose and it will quickly become a cherished part of your lives.
