Family Holiday Traditions

Family holiday traditions are part of what makes this time of year so special. They encourage us to be intentional about what we’re doing in a season where the calendar is constantly full, but they also create memories that your child will carry with them forever. How do traditions even start, though? Here are some ideas we’ve come up with to help you create unique traditions for your family.

Start Small

Set yourself up for success by thinking of something small and simple and allow your family to let it grow and adapt in the following years. For example, make salt-dough ornaments for yourselves one year, or bake sugar cookies from the take-and-bake aisle at the grocery store. As your kids get older, the tradition may manifest into looking for brand new crafts or more adventurous recipes!

A Family Affair

The holidays are about family and togetherness so encourage your preschooler to ask older relatives such as grandparents, aunts, and uncles about what family traditions they used to have as children. The storytelling aspect alone will create a sense of family and tradition, and it’s highly likely your kids will want to try a tradition themselves! They may even learn something new about your family’s history and culture by learning of some of the older traditions in your family tree.

Make it a Priority

Be intentional about making your family traditions a priority as you plan your holiday season, and let the feeling of joy and magic help you anticipate it for years to come. Prioritize this special event or activity each year, and your kids will continue the tradition even once they graduate, grow up, and have families of their own.
