Paying it Forward this Thanksgiving

Paying it Forward

Thanksgiving is, quite simply, a time of showing thanks. Chances are, your preschooler has the “thanks” part down pat! She says “thank you” and shows appreciation to others. But, how is she doing on the whole “giving” part? Giving to others is a natural next step to thankfulness. When you are thankful for something you have been given, you want to pass it on to others by giving to them. So, how do you do this with a preschooler?

Give what you have

Are your storage closets overstuffed with ill-fitting garments and overlooked toys? Purge your things and scale it down! You can hold a yard sale and donate your earnings to your favorite charity. Or, on the other hand, you can load them up and take them to your nearby Goodwill or Salvation Army store to donate.

Perhaps you are blessed enough to be able to afford giving a Thanksgiving feast to a family that would otherwise do without. Take your preschooler to the supermarket to shop for the conventional Thanksgiving dinner fixings (turkey, potatoes, corn, cranberry sauce, pie, and so forth.) and drop them off at that family’s home.

Make it a family venture

For a preschooler, giving back will require a little parental supervision. That’s great–turn it into a family affair! Think of things your preschooler likes to do. Are there any nearby organizations than can utilize these abilities? Does your child love pets? Volunteer at the animal shelter! Does she jump at the chance to cook? Serve at the nearby soup kitchen! Does he have a generous spirit? Gather things for the poor and take them to your neighborhood food pantry. There are charitable organizations to fit almost any interest!

In the end, it’s not what you give, or the amount you give that matters. The goal is simply to include your youngsters and family in giving back to others in the community. Teaching your child to give and serve will be characteristics that benefit them their whole lives.
