Involving a Preschool Child in Music

Involving a Preschool Child in Music at Kids 'R' Kids Eagle Springs, childcare, daycare, preschool

Music can have positive effects on your child’s brain by stimulating cognitive development, aiding in the development of perceptual skills, and improving spatial reasoning, which is related to skills used to do math. Plus, music is calming and just plain fun! Here are some tried and true ways to involve your preschooler in music.

Start with the classics for preschoolers to remember.

Preschoolers enjoy singing along to songs that are easy for them to remember, especially those with upbeat, repetitive melodies and lyrics. Start with classic, simple songs, such as “If You’re Happy and You Know It,” “The Wheels on the Bus,” “Old MacDonald,” and “Rain, Rain, Go Away.”

Create DIY maracas.

Create your own DIY maracas with only two supplies, both of which you probably already have on hand. Fill an empty water bottle with a handful of popcorn kernels or dry beans, screw on the lid, and shake away! You can even use these makeshift maracas to teach your child all about rhythm.

Take your preschooler to a concert!

Nothing is as engaging and exciting as live music.  Why not hold a jam session in your home? This is a great way to involve other members of the family, especially older siblings who will enjoy the opportunity to show off the results of their piano or violin lessons.

Create an “active” playlist.

Music is also a wonderful way to keep your child active. Songs like “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” will get your little one moving, but nothing is as fun as freeform dancing to fun upbeat music. Check out this playlist of energetic, kid-friendly songs.

Show your child different instruments.

You can also teach your preschooler about the wide variety of instruments that can be found at your local music store. Bongo drums, a piano, and the recorder are all easy to play and fun to use. So, crank up the tunes, and enjoy the wonderful benefits music has to offer!
