Preschool is one of the very first places that children begin to make friends. While encouraging them to get along with everyone, it’s important to understand why our children need friends and what we can do to help them make lasting relationships with other children their age.
Making friends might be harder than it sounds since it actually requires some skill and understanding! First, children need to learn empathy. They will learn this as they make friends and interact with their family. It is important for children to be able to feel what others feel, and understand or respond appropriately. Empathy is one of the most important traits in any relationship or job, so starting younger is better! Help your children to understand that everyone has emotions and feelings.
Kindness is another important trait that is necessary in a relationship. Teach your children that we should treat each other well, regardless of the mood or circumstances that we are experiencing. It takes maturity and strength to be able to overcome your own bad day in order to extend kindness to others who are also feeling down.
In all friendships, it is necessary to have an understanding heart. You can teach your children practical ways to show their love to a friend. Things like scheduling play dates with other children and teaching the importance of sharing can go a long way. Ask your children about their friends so that you can see what areas you can help them with.
Celebrating friendships in preschool is a great way to encourage children to learn to put themselves aside and consider the well-being of others. This is the beginning of learning how to interact with other people and to encourage their socialization with other children. Great friendships start here!
