Trick-or-Treating with Preschoolers

Trick-or-Treating with Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Bella Terra

Trick-or-treating is one of fall’s best traditions for many families, and this year your preschooler can get in on the fun! From costume ideas to choosing the best time to go, here are tips for how to make the most out of trick-or-treating with your preschooler.

Picking the costume

Make sure to pick a costume that your little one is comfortable in and goes well with the weather. If it’s going to be cold, pick a costume that has layers, or bring a sweater for them just in case. You don’t want your child to overheat either, so make sure to check the weather and pick something adaptable. If this is your child’s first time wearing a costume for a long time, it’s best to stay away from face paint or anything too intricate. Let them help pick out the costume, and remember—it’s supposed to be a fun way to express themselves.

Time Carefully

Trick-or-treating is traditionally an evening activity, but your little ones still need their sleep! Many families start trick-or-treating when it starts getting dark but is still light enough to see easily. If needed, plan your dinner earlier so you have plenty of time to trick or treat to your child’s content while leaving enough time for a bath before bed.

Make it a Group Activity

If you are comfortable with the idea, invite your child’s friends and parents to come along. Pretty much everything is more fun with friends, but be sure you take into account your local restrictions on gatherings and social distancing. Play it safe by wearing a mask–it adds to the Halloween fun anyway!

Monitor Candy

As with many things, when it comes to your children it’s always better to play it safe with your preschooler’s candy. You’ll want to keep an eye out for any off behavior as they ring doorbells and interact with possible strangers. Before they dig into their delicious treats, go through their bags to watch out for opened items, labels you don’t recognize, or potentially any baked goods, especially if your child has an allergy.
