Were you aware that according to the U.S. Department of Education, 54% of adults in the U.S. aged 16-74 years old are reading below a sixth-grade level? Florida is the first state to address this issue by starting the VPK program. Voluntary Prekindergarten Program. The VPK program is a program established in Florida for children ages 4 and 5. The program is offered to all residents free of charge regardless of family income. Children who participate in the VPK program are better prepared when they go to kindergarten.
Not every child is ready for vigorous work and focus when starting kindergarten. The VPK program is designed to develop age-appropriate tasks for brain development which helps with cognitive functions. The program teaches kids through learning such as recognizing colors, shapes, counting, and similarities. While this may seem like an extension of daycare, it helps children grasp concepts such as time, space, and organizational skills.
Physical and Motor Development
It is ever so important for children to have developed physical fitness as well as good motor skills. Getting up off the couch and moving around is so important for overall growth and well-being. The VPK program is set up to introduce strengthening, and physical activity through games as well as develop fine motor skills.
Self-Esteem
The interaction with other children is very important in the development of self-esteem. The children will work together to complete tasks, solve puzzles, and win games which reinforces a “can-do” attitude. They will also work in groups which will build team dynamics that will be used throughout their lives.
Socializing
It is never too soon to start your kids socializing with other adults or children. Allowing your child to develop her/his own social comforts is important to the development of your child. At VPK your child will interact with other children their age as well as adults that will be teaching them.
Special Needs
If your child has special needs, he/she can be a part of the VPK community. They can participate in the VPK Specialized Instructional Services Education Program. Our certified or licensed instructors provide education in private or small group settings. Once the child has a current instructional education plan (IEP) from that school district they may participate.
