Summer may be waning, but there are still plenty of hot days ahead for the kids to get outside and enjoy playing and having fun before school starts. Summer water activities are an excellent way for kids to enjoy the summer without letting the heat get them down. Here’s our list of exciting water activities for your kids.

Transform your backyard into a mini water park with just a few simple supplies. Set up a sprinkler in the middle of the lawn for the kids to run through. Add a slip-n-slide for a thrilling ride that ends with a refreshing splash. For a bit more excitement, you can create a DIY splash pad using a plastic tarp, pool noodles, and a hose. Tape the pool noodles around the tarp’s edges, poke holes in the tap, and turn on the water for hours of fun.

Water Balloon Piñata

Take the classic piñata game to the next level by swapping out the traditional candy-filled container with water balloons. Fill balloons with water and hang them from a tree or clothesline. Blindfold the kids and give them a stick to try and burst the balloons. This game is a blast and is a great way to cool down.

Pool Games

If you have access to a pool, there are endless things you can do beyond swimming. A classic game like Marco Polo never goes out of style. Another pool favorite is treasure hunt. Toss a handful of dive sticks, rings, or coins into the pool and see who can collect the most in a set time.

If you want something more structured, organize a pool relay race. Divide the kids into teams and have them race across the pool using different swimming strokes or have them carry a ball or other object from one side to the other without dropping it.

DIY Water Wall

Water walls are simple and captivating backyard activities that everyone can enjoy. All you need is a sturdy fence or wall, some plastic bottles, funnels, and tubing. Attach the bottles and funnels to the wall in a vertical arrangement and connect them with the tubing. Kids can pour water at the top, watch as it flows down through the various paths, and pour out at the bottom.

This fun and educational activity introduces basic principles like gravity and water flow.

Water Balloon Dodgeball

Combine the excitement of dodgeball with the fun of water balloons, and you’ve got a game that kids won’t want to stop playing. Divide the kids into two teams, give them plenty of water balloons, and let the game begin. The rules are simple: if you get hit by a balloon, you’re out. The great thing about water balloon dodgeball is that getting hit means getting a splashy cooldown.

Sponge Tag

A twist on the classic game, sponge tag uses water-soaked sponges instead of tagging by touch. It’s a great way to cool off while running around and can be played in teams or every player for themselves.

Water Limbo

Set up a limbo stick with a gentle stream of water from a hose instead of a solid bar. The player must pass under without getting wet. Lower the stream for each round until only the most flexible (and driest) kid remains.

These activities aim for kids to have a watery blast, but it’s crucial to keep everyone safe. Prioritize safety by:

  • Ensuring there’s always an adult present when the kids are engaging in any water-based activity.
  • Apply and reapply sunscreen thought the day.
  • Encourage regular hydration breaks because it’s easy to forget about drinking water even when playing in it.
  • Use lifejackets for younger children or weaker swimmers during pool activities.
