Summer has arrived, and what better way to beat the Florida heat than splashing around in the pool or ocean! If your kids, like many others, are jumping for joy at the chance to enjoy a nice, refreshing swim it’s important to know and practice some water safety before diving right in. Even if your child has had swimming lessons, this doesn’t guarantee their safety when it comes to a big body of water, whether that be the pool or beach. It’s important for us as parents to be watching and ready for anything! So, let’s talk safety tips and rules you can follow to ensure fun-filled summer days for you and your kids.

Kids are curious and accidents can happen in an instant. Always be mindful of your child’s surroundings if there is a body of water nearby, no matter how big or small it may be. Pool decks are often slippery and beach waves can be strong, so it’s important that no matter where you’re enjoying your summer day, your little ones always have an adult nearby anytime they are in or near the water.

Stay Alert

Now that we’ve established the importance of an adult being present, it’s time to stress the importance of being alert and focused. It’s best to avoid anything that could distract you or impair your judgement when it comes to keeping an eye on the little ones. Consider having a rotation of people who can take “shifts” to watch the kids.

Floatation Devices

Floaties and inflatable tubes are a good precaution to help your kids stay above the water, but they are not fool-proof. Don’t rely on a flotation device alone to keep your child safe.

If your child is eager to splash around in the pool or ocean it may be smart to sign them up for swim lessons! Swim lessons can be started from a very young age to help give your child the confidence to enjoy the water as well as tools they need in case they fall into the water accidentally, but it still cannot fully eliminate the risk of drowning. Even with swim lessons, it’s important to be alert and present when your kids are swimming.

CPR

Although you may be taking all the right precautions, kids are unpredictable and accidents can still happen. It is wise to learn and keep up to date on your CPR skills in case of an emergency where lifeguards or other help may not be present. By becoming familiar with CPR for infants, children and adults, you’ll be better equipped to handle the situation until help arrives.
