Children and parents alike look forward to warm summer months and all of the opportunities for rest and relaxation it can bring. School is out and early mornings rushing to get ready for the day can be put to the side for the next 3 months. It doesn’t take long however for children to start getting antsy when there isn’t planned activities scheduled for every hour of the day. For parents, it can feel like you might lose your mind when school is out and you are stuck at home with bored young children all day every day. Here are some fun summer activities that will help you and your children with the stuck-at-home blues that can come with summer.
1) Make Movies or Put on Plays
Many of us have video cameras or smart phones that let us record memories and milestones but put that camera to good use over the summer by making movies or performing plays with your children. Have your children put together a “script” and get down to acting out the play/movie inside, outside, or even around town.
2) Organize Your Home or Redecorate
Kids may hate cleaning their room but redecorating or starting a new organization project can be a lot of fun. Help your child rearrange their room for a fresh new look. Paint furniture that could use a facelift for a brand new feel or go through toys and clothes they’ve outgrown that can get donated to families in need. Check out Pinterest for some cheap, free, or affordable decorating fun tips and ideas and use those rainy summer days to get active indoors.
3) Whip Up Some Summer Treats
Cooking together is a great way to add a little summer learning to family fun time. Whether your baking cookies or whipping up some frozen treats to beat the summer heat, use kitchen time to help young children learn about math and measurements.
4) Start a Family Book Club
Your children don’t have to be able to read to enjoy the benefits of a family book club. Each week, pick a topic or theme that children can read (or be read to) about. Beach, camping, under the sea, and even travel themed books are all ideas that are great for summer reading activities. Have each child discuss their stories and what they had in common, what they did or didn’t like, and how the characters in the book relate to them. You can plan weekly trips to the library (think summer ‘field trips’) and have each child pick out their book for that week.
5) Gardening

You don’t need to have a green thumb to enjoy planting a family garden. Try planting herbs & vegetables in pots on the porch or start with easy-to-care for flowers in your garden beds. Read up on how to start a butterfly garden or how to pick flowers that attract birds and honey bees. Tend to the flowers every few days and that will keep you and your kids busy all summer long as the flowers and plants grow and blossom.
