Spooky season comes with a lot of thrills and fun! Between school parties, special treats, and the big day, your little ones will be full of excitement. But just like with everything, safety should always be the first concern and there are several considerations to make when it comes to trick or treating. Luckily, we’ve made a quick round up of the best safety tips we can think of.

Choosing a Costume:

Deciding on a costume for the special night can be quite the task. For a safe and fun night, make sure to consider the following:

  • Make sure you have your little one try on their costume before Halloween — if it’s too big, there may be trip hazards; if it’s too thin, it can be too chilly for the late October evening.
  • If possible, try to add on reflective tape or stickers. You can also attach glow sticks to their bag and/or costume to add to their visibility.
  • Send them with a flashlight so they can see their surroundings and avoid falling.

Safe Feet, More Treats

Depending on how old your little trick or treaters are, they may travel in groups or with their own parents/guardians. Make sure to review these safety considerations before going out for the night:

  • Always pay attention to stop signs, crosswalks, and look both ways. It’s easy for kids to get over excited and quickly forget this very important safety rule.
  • Walk on sidewalks as much as possible, and close to the curb if not.
  • Try to avoid extra busy neighborhoods if it is possible. Sometimes, it’s not possible to get away from heavily trafficked roads, so it’s important to review all of these rules.
  • Put the phone down (kids and parents/guardians, alike!) It’s best to be present and it also minimizes distractions for all of the safety considerations.
  • Make sure to triple check that a car is stopped and acknowledges walkers before they cross. It’s important to be aware of all cars, including those that may be backing up or turning around.

Special Considerations for Parents & Drivers

For the parents and guardians out there, that may be out driving that night, it’s critical to be extra careful. Tragedies can happen in an instant so it’s important to do your part to minimize this risk.

  • Drive extra slow in residential neighborhoods — you never know how early they start and kids may dart across the road.
  • Put the phone down (yes, here too!) Minimize any distractions that can take your focus away from the road.
  • Turn your headlights on, even if it is earlier than you think you need to put them on.

Now that we’re reminded of the safety basics for Halloween, enjoy the spooky, treats-filled holiday loved by many!
