Back to school time can be a stressful and difficult time for kids and parents alike. While it may be exciting, there are still nerves and jitters that can get in the way of the fun — this can especially be true for younger kids as it’s all new to them.
How can you help your kid (and likely yourself as parents)? Take a look at 5 tips to get you and your kids through this potentially tricky transition.
Transition to the right schedule
Summertime could mean a later bedtime and sleeping in. If this sounds like your child, it may be best to ease them into the correct bedtime. Otherwise, it may be a tough wakeup call that first day back to school. If your kids struggle to get to bed, consider limiting screen time and stimulating activities closer to bed. Also try to encourage earlier wake ups. Leaving the house in the morning could help to establish this routine too.
First year at a new school? Familiarize!
Especially with younger kids, a new school can be very overwhelming. Many schools offer transition programs, meet-and-greets, or even just an opportunity to walk around the school and see your child’s classroom. Not only can this get out those unfamiliar jitters, but it can also get your student excited to get to school!
Talk out feelings related to school
It’s important to encourage your kids to express their feelings about school. While some may be very excited, others may be apprehensive of all of the new activities, classmates, and being away from home. Provide coping mechanisms such as breathing or counting to ten can help them if they experience jitters. Also be sure to pack things that may make your child feel more comfortable, such as a picture of your family or a favorite small stuffed animal.
Discuss basic safety
Unfortunately, an important topic to cover with your kids is safety. It’s likely the school will follow specific policies and procedures for the school, but it’s important to cover basics such as using crosswalks, talking to strangers, and ensuring they know how important it is to listen to their teacher.
Make it fun!
Lastly (and most importantly), try to make this transition a fun and special one. These memories will stick with your little ones, so consider making certain things a tradition. For example, back to school shopping and a special lunch or getting your nails painted together. Make sure they feel happy and confident in their back to school outfit and backpack, too!
