If you were to ask 100 kids what their favorite holiday was, there’s little chance any will say President’s Day. President’s Day is celebrated on the third Monday in February. While it’s not one kids typically get excited about, it’s an opportunity for them to learn and have a little fun. Here are some tips to make this President’s Day enjoyable for your kiddos.

Presidential Fact Hunt

Send the kids on a scavenger hunt with clues based on interesting facts about the U.S. presidents. For example, you could include trivia about George Washington’s teeth or Abraham Lincoln’s love for wrestling. This activity encourages children to learn about the personal lives of these men while honing their research skills.

educational crafts for kids in Avalon Park, FLMount Rushmore with Play-Doh

Young children love creating with Play-Doh, and you can give them a hands-on history lesson by having them recreate Mount Rushmore in Play-Doh or clay. This stimulates creativity and can be a way to teach them about the presidents featured on Mount Rushmore (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln) and why they were chosen for the honor.

Presidential Portraits

Set up an art station where the kids can draw or paint their favorite president or one they recently learned about. Give them a photo or pull one on their tablet or phone for reference. Art is an excellent way to get children excited about subjects they wouldn’t usually be interested in, like presidential history.

Presidential Role Play

Organize a role-play session where kids can dress up as different presidents and act out key points during their presidencies.

Go to the Library

If your kids like to read or be read to, go to the library and check out books about presidents. Most libraries have wonderful children’s books explaining their lives and achievements.

Watch Videos

Some kids prefer watching instead of reading, and there are many videos online where they can learn about the history of President’s Day and some of the people who served in that office throughout history.

Visit Historical Sites

Many presidential libraries, museums, and historical sites offer virtual online tours. Schedule a “virtual field trip” day where the kids can explore a historical site from home. When finished, you can discuss what they learned with them.

Another fun activity the kids will love is holding a household “election” to elect a house president for the day. Or if having your kid as president for the whole day is too much, make them president over the TV or the dinner menu. This will give them an idea of what it’s like to make decisions and learn how to handle the democratic process when they don’t get their way.
