With the holidays around the corner, there’s no better time to recognize the value of giving to your children. Of course, there’s value in giving back to your community or those less fortunate year-round, but if there’s only one month that you’re able; December may be the time. It’s important to emphasize to little ones that help and “giving” doesn’t always have to mean money. Time and volunteering is another great way to feel connected to your community.

This month, we’re going to go over a few great ways to naturally teach the spirit of giving in your home. These activities will go along nicely with the lessons and discussions we’ll have in class. Encouraging this at home can help instill the giving attitude this month and beyond!

Maybe you’re close to your neighbors already, but maybe you’re not! This is a great opportunity to get to know them and spread some holiday cheer. Do you know if any neighbors are struggling? Whether that’s financially, emotionally, or health-wise, there may be something to do to make them smile. Give a gift, write a card, or even give them a blanket to feel a bit cozier this holiday season. Even the smallest gestures can go a long way.

Learn about other cultures

It’s easy to get swept away in your own winter holiday, and rightfully so because it’s filled with joy for your family. But your child may make a classmate’s day if they take an interest in their holiday, especially if it’s a bit different from your families. Next time you’re at the library, try to pick up a story centered around a different holiday than your own!

Donate to a coat or toy drive

Many organizations run a drive of some sort during the holidays. You can likely find one through your local church, boy/girlscout troop, rotary center, or at grocery stores! If you’re not seeing any, give a quick Google search and you’re likely to find many. Let your kids get involved in choosing and see if they have any special contributions they’d like to make. This is also a great way to cycle through toys and teach your kids the value of sharing.

Giving doesn’t always have to be monetary. Being kind at the grocery store and letting someone go ahead of you in line is a very small act that can show empathy. You may have just made that person’s afternoon if they’re in a rush. Or take some time to volunteer at a local food bank if you have extra time. Your kids will likely love it and may even ask to do it throughout the year!
