Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15th to October 15th every year! Did you know that one in four kids in the United States is of Hispanic origin? It’s exciting to celebrate each other so let’s take this month to learn something new. This year, we’re going to share five ways to learn more about our neighbors, friends, and classmates in the Hispanic and Latinx communities.

Let’s eat!

Who doesn’t love to eat? This is a great opportunity to visit or order food from a local Hispanic or Latin American-owned restaurant. You may even find your new favorite restaurant to support. If you’re more into hands-on experiences, take a look at some recipes to try out at home.

Watch a movie celebrating Latinx voices

Movie streaming platforms are great at compiling Latinx-inspired movies or movies featuring famous Latinx people. Right now, Disney+ has a “Hispanic and Latin American Leads” and “Leading Latinas” categories which is a great place to start. Other streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu also have collections put together. It’s important to note that not all films for entertainment will be 100% accurate on history or representation at times.

Take a trip to the library!

It’s true that there are so many great resources available online, but sometimes it’s nice to experience a physical book. At many libraries, there will be a section set up displaying and featuring Latinx voices along with activities or learning opportunities. There are usually two different features — in the kids and adults section. The kids section may even have additional materials you can bring home to enjoy!

Want to take action?

If you’re interested in getting involved with Latinx organizations, there are several that can serve as a learning experience as well. Below are two organizations that may be a good place to start.

  • The Committee for Hispanic Families and Children (CHFC) – CHFC provides programs that assist the needs of low-income Hispanic families and children. They provide assistance with child care, youth development, immigrant services, public policy,  and HIV/AIDS prevention and education.
  • Council for Latino Workplace Equity (CLWE) – If you’re interested in learning about workplace equity for Latino talent, CLWE may be a great place to start. They seek inclusion and opportunities for Latino leaders.

Did you know that many history museums feature several different cultures and regions of the world? There’s a good chance that a museum close to you may feature a special exhibit for National Hispanic Heritage Month. If not, you may be able to find information in the permanent exhibits. Ask your local museum curator and they can point you in the right direction!
