Transitioning From Summer To School

Now that summer is winding down and vacationing is behind us. The excitement and anxiety are ahead as a new school year begins. Whether it is the first time your little one is heading off to school. Or a seasoned schooler who is returning, there are many feelings associated with it.

Following are a few tips that may help you and your children transition back to the classroom.

Bedtime

During the summertime, bedtime gets a little lax. I know, it happens to us all. We spend the day at the beach or an amusement park and the day escapes and before you know it the kids are up way too late. It is to be expected during the lazy days of summer.

You can start getting the kids back to a regular bedtime routine a few weeks before the start of school. Start with bedtime 15 minutes earlier for a few days and then increase it. Before you know it, they are back to a routine, ready to get up and start their day.

Visit Your Child’s School

To avoid the anxiety of the first days of school, make a point to visit your child’s school. There is usually a meet and greet. Don’t miss this. Your child, as well as yourself will be happy you had the opportunity to meet your child’s teacher. They will also get a chance to see their classroom. Take a peak where their desk will be. Wonder around, search out the bathroom, the office, the gym. Get acquainted with the drive to school. Which way will the bus take them? This will all ease the anxiety of the unknown.

The Benefits Of Communication

There is no better way to ease anxiety of any kind than to be open and available for your child’s questions. Start by asking if they have any questions about what school will be like. Once you open the door for questions, your child will keep asking. Talk to them about what to expect. How does the routine of the day go? When and where do they have lunch? Is there any outdoor time? Respecting the teacher as well as their fellow students. If communication is open, your child will be less confused. He or she will know what to expect and ease the anxiety of the unknown.

Taking Care Of Themselves

Transitioning from the lazy days of summer to a full day of learning is going to be tiring. Be sure that your child is eating properly, getting enough rest, and getting some outdoor play. A little downtime will help the busyness of the day. Use these tips and you and your child’s early days of school should be a great experience. Meeting new friends and learning new things is an important part of growing up. Cherish these moments.
