What Parents Needs to Know About Play

Preschool in Avalon Park FL

Play can seem like just a simple way that kids entertain themselves but it is an invaluable tool for learning. The impulse that children have to play comes from their natural desire to understand the world around them. Children need play just as much as they need food or sleep and it’s important for parents & teachers to foster a fun environment that includes free play and guided play to help them learn new concepts and retain more information.

During play, children are developing valuable skills including:

  • cognitive skills including math & problem solving
  • physical abilities for fine & gross motor skills like balancing blocks, running, and hand & finger control
  • new vocabulary & categorization skills like separating vegetables & fruit in a play kitchen and identifying dinosaurs
  • social skills that include playing together and taking turns
  • literacy skills that can include making a menu for a pretend restaurant

According to Laurel Bongiorno in her article in NAEYC discussing how children use play, “Play is simple and complex. There are many types of play: symbolic, sociodramatic, functional, and games with rules-–to name just a few. Researchers study play’s many aspects: how children learn through play, how outdoor play impacts children’s health, the effects of screen time on play, to the need for recess in the school day.” Curiosity, initiative & problem solving, along with persistence are just a few approaches to learning that young children and preschoolers can develop through play. It’s important for parents to incorporate learning into play by discussing things that are happening and asking questions that encourages problem solving.

Playing along side your child or children will help them stay engaged in guided play where learning often occurs most successfully. Expressing interest, asking questions, commenting on details of their play will help encourage productive, functional play. Plus, you will be creating a strong bond with your child.  Most importantly, unbeknownst to them, you will successfully building important approaches to learning that will help guarantee their continued academic success throughout the rest of their school age years.
