Learning Activities You Can Do at Home

Child care in East Orlando FL

Preschool is a great environment for children to explore and learn through play. But, a classroom isn’t the only place for learning activities. When your preschooler is at home, you become their teacher. The goal for parents should be to remember that the learning done outside of school doesn’t have to feel like a classroom lesson. Get your preschooler excited about discovering something new when you disguise learning activities as playtime fun. Try these fun learning activities for kids that you can do at home:

1) Play Learning Games

Get learning in motion by playing simple games with your preschooler. Whether you play “I Spy” to search for colors during your daily errand run or “Memory” to stimulate your child’s concentration, you can use simple, easy-to-do learning games to help foster an educational experience out of a school setting. For preschoolers, start with a basic game that helps your child learn things like farm animals, numbers, colors and shapes. You can even adapt the games for older, school-age children to cover anatomy, world government, foreign language and history.

2) Learn Phonics Basics

Learning to read is one of the most important tasks a parent can pass on to their children. Phonic basics will prepare your preschooler for spelling and reading readiness. You don’t have to sit still in a chair endlessly repeating letter sounds in hopes your child will catch on. Try fun phonics activities that make learning phonics an adventure instead of a tedious lesson. A simple “Letter Hunt” game is the perfect way to teach about the alphabet and sound of letters. Choose a letter and write it on a piece of construction paper. Go through old magazines (National Geographic magazines are great!)  or picture books and have your child find everything they can that start with your chosen letter. Cut out the pictures and glue or tape to the construction paper. In the end, your child will have a large flashcard full of words and pictures that correlate to a letter.

3) Practice Writing Skills

Writing is a skill your preschooler will use throughout their life. There are plenty of fun ways to encourage your child to perfect their writing skills beyond just a pencil and paper. Have your child practicing making letters in a tray of shaving cream. Use “connect the dots” style game to get your preschooler to write their name. Chalkboards and dry erase boards are also great tools for drawing and writing practice!

4) Try Science Experiments at Home

When you think of a “science experiment” you might envision an exploding papier-mâché volcano or a chemistry tube nightmare, but fear not. You don’t have to turn your kitchen into a blast zone to teach preschoolers a good science lesson at home! The goal of simple science experiments is to help your children develop questions, problem solve, and find answers. Create slime. Find out how much liquid one dish sponge can hold. Use bubbles to find out answers to questions like ‘can bubbles bounce?’ Make ice cream in a bag. Try using magnets on different items around your house. The possibilities are endless and easy.

5) Explore World Cultures with Food & Crafts

Daycare in Avalon Park FL

A little creativity is all it takes to teach your preschooler about world cultures. Using crafts or sampling new foods will make learning fun while enriching their awareness of other people’s traditions and ways of life around the globe. Preschoolers can enjoy making crafts he might find in other countries and tasting authentic foods you cook together.
