1. Be your child’s biggest fan. Encourage them to be themselves as an individual and let them know it’s OK to try new things or even change their minds on what they like or don’t like to do over the course of time. Make sure your child feels comfortable and unrestrained when they are exploring new activities or talents.
2. Provide the resources they need for creative expression. The main (and most successful) resource we advise is time. Preschoolers need a lot of time for unstructured, child-directed, imaginative play that is unencumbered by adult direction.
3. Let young children express “divergent thought.” It is OK if your preschooler disagrees with you on solutions to problems. Encourage them to find more than one route to a solution, and more than one solution to a problem.
4. Don’t be too set on outcome. Emphasize the process rather than the product of the activities they choose. It’s more important that they had fun and learned new things than what the final outcome of the activity is.
5. Encourage children to make their own choices. Children should be permitted frequent opportunities and play time to experience and explore expressive materials. Independence and control are important components in the creative process.
Here at Kids ‘R’ Kids Avalon Park, we understand that creativity is the freest form of self-expression and there is nothing more satisfying and fulfilling for preschoolers and young children than to be able to express themselves openly and without judgment. We always encourage creative expression, dramatic play, and other opportunities for our students to express themselves, try new activities, discover new talents.
