Encouraging Creative Expression in Your Preschooler

Preschool in Avalon Park FL

Creativity is an essential part of the experience of being human. Every single one of us has the potential to be creative in what we do throughout our daily adventures. Creativity, no matter for what age we are addressing, is associated with curiosity, experimentation, wonder about life, expressing one’s self, learning new skills, or coming up with new ways of looking at the world. As a parent or a teacher, you can imagine how the preschool years are the ideal time to encourage creativity and creative expression! The impact you can have in your children’s lives and on their future success can be tremendous if, early on, you begin to nurture their natural curiosity and foster their love for fun and learning.

Creative expression is extremely important because it allows us to be open to new experiences that may be out of our comfort zone. These experiences include having a good imagination, experiencing and valuing feelings of all kinds, having the courage to try new things, honing in on a curious mindset, and being open to new challenges that may be unconventional to what you are used to. Promoting creativity & encouraging creative expression through environments and materials is crucial for a preschooler’s development. Young children typically learn the most when they are actively engaged in their environment. As parents and teachers, it is imperative that we provide our preschoolers with ample opportunities to explore these educational environments by moving, touching, and experimenting with different materials, expressing ideas and emotions, and manipulating different toys or objects.

Here are some tips on how to help spark powerful and meaningful connections and encourage creative expression in your preschooler:

1. Be your child’s biggest fan. Encourage them to be themselves as an individual  and let them know it’s OK to try new things or even change their minds on what they like or don’t like to do over the course of time. Make sure your child feels comfortable and unrestrained when they are exploring new activities or talents.

2. Provide the resources they need for creative expression. The main (and most successful) resource we advise is time. Preschoolers need a lot of time for unstructured, child-directed, imaginative play that is unencumbered by adult direction.

3. Let young children express “divergent thought.” It is OK if your preschooler disagrees with you on solutions to problems. Encourage them to find more than one route to a solution, and more than one solution to a problem.

4. Don’t be too set on outcome. Emphasize the process rather than the product of the activities they choose. It’s more important that they had fun and learned new things than what the final outcome of the activity is.

5. Encourage children to make their own choices. Children should be permitted frequent opportunities and play time to experience and explore expressive materials. Independence and control are important components in the creative process.

Here at Kids ‘R’ Kids Avalon Park, we understand that creativity is the freest form of self-expression and there is nothing more satisfying and fulfilling for preschoolers and young children than to be able to express themselves openly and without judgment. We always encourage creative expression, dramatic play, and other opportunities for our students to express themselves, try new activities, discover new talents.
