Contrast Between Childcare and Preschool

Daycare in Avalon Park FL

When searching for an education program for your young child, you will be faced with many suitable choices. During your research, you may come across different types of facilities; mainly preschools and day cares. You may be wondering if they are just two different names for the same type of program or if there is a distinct difference that may affect the outcome of your decision. Our childcare experts are here to help. Check out the following information that will help you define each and determine which is better for your family’s needs.

Defining & Differentiating Each

Day care centers are generally the most viable option for working parents who need their children to be taken care of for long hours during the day. A day care typically accepts babies, toddlers, and even early school age children. These full-time, full-year programs can still offer well-trained teachers and stimulating age-appropriate activities for children, much like a traditional preschool program.

Preschool refers to an early-childhood educational class for 3- and 4-year-olds. Many preschool programs are only part-time, meaning they are offered fore a few hours a day two to five times a week. Some preschool programs run full time but are only offered from September to May, or a traditional school year calendar. These programs often feature planned & scheduled activities and learning environments that are designed to help develop the academic and social skills of 3 and 4 year olds.

It is important to note that sometimes, these two terms are often used interchangeably. A childcare center with experienced teachers and planned stimulating activities offers kids similar advantages to a preschool. In fact, many preschools are part of childcare programs, like here at Kids ‘R’ Kids Orlando!

Price

A day care program will cost you more overall, but the price is almost always better when you break it down hour by hour. Sometimes it’s several dollars less for each hour, which is especially important for working parents who need their little ones cared for many hours per week. Preschool prices, on the other hand, are generally less per month than child care, especially for options such as two or three mornings per week. Preschool registration can begin 6 months before the school year begins and often requires a deposit to hold your child’s spot. Day care usually doesn’t require pre-registration months in advance although popular programs may have a waiting list.

It’s good to note that here in the state of Florida, Voluntary Pre-K is FREE for eligible students!

What Should I Choose?

The most important consideration you will need to keep in mind when choosing between a day care and preschool program is understanding what will work best for your family. Do you work full time? Do you want a year-round program or just something for the school year? Are you on a smaller monthly budget? Does your child do better when away from you for shorter periods of time? Does your child have special academic or social needs that have to be considered? Speaking with one of our qualified educators and program leaders can help you make an informed decision.
