Fourteen Ways Parents Can Help Their Preschooler Succeed at School Pt 1

Child care in East Orlando FL

Parents are their children’s first, and most important, teacher. When mom and dad are involved with their preschooler’s school, the child will perform better and enjoy school more. Research has shown that active parent involvement in their children’s school has more effect on academic success than how much money a family makes or how much education the parents have.

There are plenty of ways that parents can support their preschooler’s learning throughout the school year and even at home after school hours. Here are 7 ideas to help you get started. Don’t forget to check out the second part of this series to find out another 7 ways to help your child success at school.

Tip #1 – Meet Your Child’s Teacher

Your preschooler’s teacher will be your biggest ally. Here at Kids ‘R’ Kids, we love meeting the parents of our students and will gladly work with you to ensure a happy and helpful educational experience for your child. As soon as the school year starts, make an effort to meet with your preschooler’s teacher. Let them know that you are excited to work together with them to keep your child on track. Discuss questions and concerns and keep communication open throughout the school year.

Tip #2 – Get to Know The Administration, Too.

Teachers aren’t the only people at your child’s school who are there to help. Administrators, special education staff, and other personnel are there to help your child learn, grow socially & emotionally, and navigate a new educational experience.

Tip #3 – Set Up Parent-Teacher Conferences Throughout the Year

Check in on your preschooler’s progress throughout the school year by attending a parent-teach conference. Teachers are glad to discuss how your child is progressing with learning activities and what can be done at home to improve or strengthen important skills. If you have a question or concern that cannot wait until a scheduled conference, shoot your child’s teacher an email or send in a note to school.

Tip #4 – Find Out if Your Child Needs Extra Help

Check in with your child’s teacher periodically to find out how well they are doing in class compared to their peers. If your preschooler is having trouble keeping up, find out if your child could use some extra help.

If you suspect that your preschooler is developing a problem with learning or social skills, ask the school to evaluate your child. We are always happy to provide accommodations for your child in class and will be glad to direct you to the right resources that can help your child excel.

Tip #6 – Continue Learning at Home

Learning doesn’t have to stop when your child leaves the confines of the classroom walls. Practicing new skills at home and staying engaged in your child’s early learning will support school readiness and future academic success. Have your preschooler continue writing and reading at home in a fun, unstructured environment for the best success. Here at Kids ‘R’ Kids Avalon Park, each student gets access to the incredible learning website ABC Mouse. Preschoolers can access this tool at home and play fun learning games in an interactive classroom that will help them fine tune their new skills.

Tip #7 – Use Games to Practice New Skills

We often speak on the importance of play in learning. Use play to help strengthen the skills your child has learned at school. Have your preschooler count the items you place in your basket at the grocery store. Have them identify the shapes of signs as you drive. Ask your child to help cook dinner and sort ingredients by size or color.
