‘Twas the Night Before Preschool

Toddler Daycare in East Orlando

While your child may be excited for a new adventure in preschool this fall, it can still be difficult for some children to take this big step towards independence.  With the proper preparation, the first day of preschool can be great for both students and parents alike. Help set a positive tone for the rest of the school year with these back to school tips for the night before the “big” first day of preschool!

  1. Pack Their Backpack Together

Your child’s preschool teacher should send home a list of necessary supplies, if any, that you and your little one can organize and pack together. Show your little one where to put things in their backpack, like snacks and a drink bottle, and have them practice zipping their backpack open and closed. Place it somewhere that you won’t forget it the next day.

  1. Pick Out an Outfit

By letting your child pick out clothing the night before, you can avoid last-minute arguments over what to wear on the first day that can lead to sour moods and temper tantrums. If your preschooler needs assistance, lay out a couple choices and let them decide which their favorite is.

  1. Choose a Special Item

Most preschools allow children to bring in a blanket or special item for nap time. If your child has a blankie or favorite stuffed animal, make sure to have it in a place where they won’t forget it on their way to school. Being without your mommy or daddy can be scary and a special item that they can look at a touch can help them feel comfortable if separation anxiety sets in.

  1. Discuss How They Are Feeling

Talk to your preschooler about what they are excited or concerned about. Reassure them that everything will be OK and that their teachers are there to help if they feel anxious. Be positive and confident, even if you are dealing with your own anxieties about your child taking this big step. If your child has questions, make sure to answer them with reassurance.

  1. Read a Bed Time Story on Preschool

There are a number of great books available at libraries and bookstores that cover events like the first day of preschool. If your child has separation anxiety, find a book that deals with the topic in a positive manner.

  1. Turn in Early

Sleep is critical for everyone to feel ready for the first day of preschool. Start your bedtime routine a little earlier than normal so you have time to read and talk about how your child is feeling and spend extra time cuddling together.
