Summer Fun Activities to Promote Learning

Summer Camp in Avalon Park

Summer is almost here! If you are looking for ways to have fun with your child that will not only promote learning but keep children away from computers, TVs, and their phone this summer, then this blog post is for you! Every parent struggles to find new ideas to keep their children entertained during the warm weather months. The following tips will give you some ideas to keep your children learning while decreasing screen time.

Embrace Your Child’s Interests

The best way to get your child to have fun while learning is to do something that interests them. If your preschooler or young child has a passion for a certain activity or hobby, give them opportunities to explore these interests. If they love learning about nature, a hike or walk in a nearby park is a great way to get them outdoors. Combine this with a scavenger hunt for different shapes, plants, or bugs and your child will be learning as they play. If your child prefers dinosaurs, a trip to a museum can fill an entire day! Also consider signing them up for a music or art class if they fancy coloring or creating.

Family Game Time

An easy way to incorporate math into play time is by playing board games. Board games are both fun and challenging and often require counting of spaces, cards, or money, all of which can enhance math skills without seeming like a chore. Choose games that require basic addition, counting, or color matching and make sure the game is age-level appropriate or your child may feel frustrated if the rules are beyond their current capabilities.

Get Outside

Beyond just visiting your local park, take your children to historical monuments, nature preserves, botanical gardens or other outdoor areas that you don’t normally visit. Talk to your little one about the significance of the location or other interesting facts. Science & history museums that offer interactive exhibits can help your child learn new information while appealing to their playful side.

Get Your Feet Wet

Summers in Florida can be scorching hot so getting wet is a great way to stay cool and help your child get plenty of exercise. From swimming to running in a sprinkler to visiting your local spray park or pool, you can help improve a number of skills with fun water play. Let your children find out how water behaves when they pour it from one container to another or what objects sink vs. float. Not only will your child be experimenting and learning, they will stay cool and have fun in the process!
