A special treat or piece of candy in exchange for using the potty is a pretty common strategy. Parents can share in rewards too, if the child sees Mom and Dad getting a reward for going they will want to get in on the fun. Using rewards don’t always work. Maybe employing reverse psychology or a different form or incentive will do the trick.

If your child is at the point where they have “accidents”, you may have run into the hidden dirty panties. Don’t spare them the embarrassment by cleaning up the mess in secret. That reinforces the behavior. But positive correction, “it’s okay to have an accident” you let them know their secret’s out.

Don’t stress over it. Believe it or not, every child gets it sooner or later. It is a process, getting there can take time. We don’t want to over-emphasize failure                                     here. Positive reinforcement is the goal.

Most parents go through the “I can only use the potty at home” issue. Having a traveling potty that is customized with stickers can make any potty feel like home. Try to prevent those auto-flush toilets (Disneyworld, etc.) from exploding while your child is trying by covering the electronic eye with a post-it note until they are ready to exit the stall. A pre-mature flush can scare any kid away from wanted to use those places to go potty.
