How to Introduce Your Preschooler to Library Etiquette

How to Introduce Your Preschooler to Library Etiquette at Kids 'R' Kids of Waterside, childcare, daycare, children

Happy Library Month! If your preschooler is going for their first library visit, it is important to go over some basic rules of etiquette. This will help them to feel comfortable in the library and to respect the rules that are in place. Below are 10 basic rules of library etiquette for your preschooler to know:

Every Library Has a “Quiet Policy,” so Use Indoor Voices

This is one of the most important rules to remember. Libraries are places where people go to read, study and work, so it is important to be respectful of the quiet atmosphere.

Even though you are not supposed to be speaking loudly inside the library, there are still times when you may need to speak up in order to be heard. When you do, make sure to use an indoor voice so you don’t disturb others.

Walk, Don’t Run

This rule goes hand-in-hand with being quiet inside the library. Not only is running around noisy, but it can also be dangerous if you accidentally knock into someone or something.

Don’t Touch the Books You Don’t Plan to Read

It can be tempting for little ones to want to touch and hold all of the books they can hold, but it is important to resist this urge. Some books are delicate and can be easily damaged if they’re not handled with care, so we always want to touch only the books we plan on reading, and being kind to the books we interact with.

Be Careful With the Furniture

Just like the books, the furniture inside the library is also delicate. Don’t climb on the chairs or desks, and be careful not to knock them over.

Return Books to the Shelves

Once you have finished looking at a book, make sure to put it back in its rightful place on the shelf, or return it to the front desk using the book return slot. This helps to keep the library organized and makes it easier for others to find the books they are looking for.

Put Garbage in the Bin

If you have any garbage with you, make sure to dispose of it in the garbage bin. This includes food wrappers, gum, etc.

No Food or Drinks

Speaking of food, it’s important to remember that food and drinks are not allowed inside the library. Not only can they make a mess, but they can also attract pests.

Be Respectful of Others

This rule encompasses a lot of different things. In general, it’s important to be respectful of others’ personal space, belongings and privacy.

Follow Any Staff Instructions

If the staff asks you to do something, it is important to follow their instructions. They know what is best for the library and they are there to help you have a positive experience.

By following these rules of library etiquette, your preschooler will be sure to have a positive and enjoyable experience during their first visit to the library. So go celebrate Library Month, and don’t forget the most important rule of the library: learn!
