Helping Your Preschooler Handle Those Pesky Pumpkin Guts

Helping Your Preschooler Handle Those Pesky Pumpkin Guts at Kids 'R' Kids Waterside, preschool, daycare, childcare

We’ve all been there. About 30 minutes into carving a jack-o-lantern and you begin to wonder, “what am I going to do with this big mess of pumpkin guts?” Your child has likely already formed an emotional attachment to their new fall friend, so throwing them away is the last thing you want to do! Below are some fun ideas to use on your leftover pumpkin mush this fall.

Make a Pumpkin Gut Bomb

Pumpkin guts make great fertilizer for your garden–they’re full of nutrients that will help your plants grow. Simply bury them around the base of your plants and let nature do its thing! You can also take this as an opportunity to teach your preschooler about decomposition and fertilization.

Use it as a Facial Mask

Turns out, pumpkin guts are great for your skin! The enzymes in pumpkin help to break down dead skin cells, while the Vitamin A and beta carotene can help to improve the overall tone and texture of your skin. For a fun face mask activity with your little one, mix some pumpkin puree with honey and yogurt, then apply to your face and your child’s face, and let it sit for 15 minutes. During this waiting time, tell child-friendly scary stories with your preschooler or make-believe that you are jack-o-lanterns. Whatever you do, just be creative and have fun! Once the waiting time has passed, rinse with warm water and enjoy your refreshed skin.

Make Pumpkin Soap

This one is a bit more labor-intensive, but if you’re feeling crafty, you can make your own pumpkin soap! Start by rendering the fat from the pumpkin guts, then combine it with lye and water to make soap. Add in some ground pumpkin seeds for exfoliation and your favorite fragrances or essential oils for a pleasant scent. For an added element of fun for your child, find some Halloween-shaped silicone molds to form your soaps in!

As you can see, there are lots of great ways to use pumpkin guts instead of just throwing them away. So next time you’re carving a pumpkin, think about all the possibilities for what to do with the guts– and get creative!
