“Nana and Papa are coming for a visit” is sure to induce squeals of excitement from your preschooler. Chances are the grandparents can’t wait to get their hands on those sweet little babies and are eager to spoil them a bit. However, Grandparents offer more than just hugs and sweet treats to your preschooler’s life!
Family Traditions
Grandparents are a great source for your preschooler to learn about your family’s heritage and any traditions your family may have. Your preschooler will enjoy learning about your family’s history through stories from her grandparents. Her grandparents will enjoy sharing a skill or recipe that was passed down to them from an older generation, as well.
Unconditional Love
There is no love like a grandparent’s love. Your preschooler knows this and feels that extra security with his grandparents. He knows that no matter what he does or says grandpa still loves him and will lovingly guide him.
Perspective
Grandparents grew up in a different time than parents. This allows them to offer a different perspective on issues we face in today’s time. Your preschooler will find these different perspectives interesting and will become more well-rounded by having additional perspectives.
Experience
Have you ever been blown away by how quickly your preschooler picked up a skill or how easily she was able to navigate your cell phone? There are tasks that your preschooler may find easy, but her grandparents may not have mastered due to changing times. Your preschooler can increase her skills and language by teaching her grandparents tasks they find difficult that she is good at already, such as operating a cell phone.
Advice
Parenting is the most rewarding and most difficult task you will ever undertake. Although the times have changed, many aspects of parenting have not changed. Your parents or your partner’s parents can offer a lot of insight and encouragement when you are struggling with parenting.
