Three Ways Preschoolers Benefit from Music Education

Three Ways Preschoolers Benefit from Music Education at Kids 'R' Kids Waterside, preschool, daycare, childcare

Music is enjoyable, but did you know it can help in your preschooler’s development?  Music can increase cognitive, motor, and coordination skills, as well as help your preschooler acquire language and math skills.  Here are three ways preschoolers benefit from music education:

Motor Skills and Coordination

Playing an instrument requires hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, and focus.  Your little one will improve his fine motor skills through using the small muscles in his hands and arms to play an instrument and control the movements to play the proper tunes and beats.  Playing the proper beats and notes at the right time also requires focus, which is a skill most young children can benefit from extra practice.

Spatial Awareness

Spatial awareness is the skill of knowing where objects are within a space and your body’s position in relationship to those objects.  Playing music requires you to know where your body is in relation to the instrument.  Moving or dancing to music requires you to know where your body is in relation to objects and others around you.  For more on spatial awareness and why it is important, visit this article.

Cognitive Skills

Music can aid in developing cognitive skills, as well.  This article from Psychology Today explains how music increases brain function.  It states music instruction prior to age seven can help build and strengthen communication between different parts of the brain, which your preschooler will benefit from for a lifetime.  In addition to brain development, music is helpful in memorization.  Putting something to music or at least a rhythm helps our brains remember it easier.  For example, how many of us sing the alphabet song in our heads when tasked with alphabetizing words?

Grab some rhythm sticks (paint stirrers or a couple wooden spoons work great) or an empty box to use as a drum and invite your little one to keep a beat while listening to some music.  She’ll have fun and will be building lots of new skills!
