Teaching Your Preschooler to be a Problem Solver

Teaching Your Preschooler to be a Problem Solver at Kids 'R' Kids Waterside, preschool, daycare, childcare

Problem solving isn’t a skill that typically comes to mind when you think of skills a preschooler should have.  However, the skill of being able to effectively solve problems is a huge benefit to your preschooler.  Here are some ways to help your preschooler be a problem solver.

Don’t Hover

It is hard to stand back and watch your little one struggle with something when you know you can step in and fix it, but our littles don’t learn from us fixing everything for them.  Watch your preschooler as she comes across a problem or a task which is difficult for her.  Allow her to work it out on her own.  If you notice signs of frustration, offer assistance, but still allow her to work through the problem with you.

Break it Down

Help your preschooler break the problem into smaller chunks.  Talk through the problem and all the small details that make up the problem.  Help your preschooler come up with possible ways to solve each of those small details.

Creative Play

It is sometimes hard for adults to remember that children learn best through play.  Provide plenty of opportunity for creative play (e.g. building with blocks).  Your preschooler will experience more occasions of needing to solve a problem when playing creatively or using his imagination than if he is using technology to play.

Teach the Process

Teach your preschooler the steps of solving a problem.  Ask your preschooler what the problem is and then identify all the pieces that make up the problem and tackle one piece of the problem at a time.  Work with your preschooler to brainstorm possible solutions.  Allow your preschooler to try out the solutions and then evaluate the problem.  If the problem isn’t solved, move on to the next solution.

Provide Social Experiences

Provide opportunities to play with other children his age.  Encourage creative and imaginative play and allow them to work together to solve any problems that arise.  Being able to solve social conflicts will help your child greatly!
