Helping Your Preschooler Adjust to a New Sibling

Helping Your Preschooler Adjust to a New Sibling at Kids 'R' Kids Waterside, preschool, daycare, childcare

Having a new baby can bring lots of excitement to a home; however, there may be concerns about the changes about to come. Your preschooler will need help to adjust to the new sibling. You are just the person to help foster bonding between the siblings and not rivalry.

Make friends before birth

As much as is practical, involve the preschooler in the process. Show him pictures of the baby. You could have him sing to the baby and even be around when books are being read to the baby, in utero. Be careful to not tell him he is getting a new playmate, as he will be very disappointed when a noisy and sleepy baby comes home from the hospital.

Purchase a special gift

The new baby will be receiving a lot of new gifts and presents. Think of something that your preschooler would enjoy and purchase that as a gift for her. If the preschooler visits the baby in the hospital, give her the new gift.

Involve your preschooler

Find ways to involve your preschooler. One way is through giving him special jobs. To name a few options, this could be getting fresh diapers, throwing away dirty diapers, washing baby’s feet during bath time, helping pick out the outfit, opening the baby’s gifts, or even taking pictures. Remember to think of something your preschooler would enjoy. Feel free to switch up the jobs also.

Spend time alone

This may not be an easy option early on, but when possible remember to take time to specifically spend with your preschooler. Whether it is making sure she is read to every night or actually leaving the house to get ice cream, it is important to intentionally invest time in your preschooler. When she feels loved and confident in her role as the big sister, it will allow her to be more accepting of a new sibling.

A new sibling brings new joy and new challenges. Sometimes the added responsibilities appear daunting. However, with some planning and intentional involvement, the early days with a new baby at home can set the stage for a long lasting sibling relationship.
