Most of us will never travel to Africa and experience a safari in real life. That does not mean we cannot create an African adventure of our own right from home! Gather up your gear and keep reading for some safari adventures you can have right at home!
Gather Books
Setting the scene could be the most important part of this adventure for you. Gather up some books from your local library about African animals and safaris. Include children’s books and more advanced educational books in your selection. You may even find some helpful Zoo Books magazines featuring the animals. Explore these with your preschooler ahead of time so they have an idea of what is in store.
Decorate
Next, collect some props to make it feel more realistic. Your toddler probably has some stuffed animals that would be useful. Also, use your wardrobe to create some safari attire. Turn your couch into a jeep with a paper plate steering wheel. Search for a soundtrack of animal noises to use on your adventure.
Load up!
It is time for the safari to begin! Take an imaginary ride in your jeep and go sightseeing. Use some binoculars to search for animals. Play the soundtrack from your phone as you ride along. Help your child draw pictures of the animals they “saw” on the safari in a small notebook and read about them together later.
Finish with a Snack
Finally, search for a good safari documentary that is kid friendly and enjoy watching it together while you munch on some yummy snacks in your jeep. You can rename the snacks into safari sounding names. Pretzels can be giraffe spots, and Oreos can be zebra stripes, etc.
Now that the wheels are turning in your head, take these ideas and run with it! Make it as simple or elaborate as you want. Have fun learning with your preschooler this summer!
