Fun Math Activities for Preschoolers

Fun Math Activities for Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Waterside, preschool, daycare, childcare

The preschool years are exciting years exploding with development. As a preschooler matures, he will be learning skills to help prepare him for kindergarten and on. It is essential for him to have fun as new skills are learned. Here are a few activities that will help with a few of the necessary skills.

Counting

Build a tower with blocks. Count the blocks as the tower is being built. One could also build a tower of a predetermined block height. Another idea is to roll a dice and count the dots.

Recognizing numbers

On thick cardstock, write out numbers in a large print. The preschooler should use clothespins to clip onto the cardstock number using an equal amount of clothespins. Encourage outdoor play with a neighborhood number scavenger hunt. While on a walk, the preschooler can look for numbers and share which ones he finds.

Shapes

Cereal often comes in squares, circles, and rectangles. Using different cereals, have a preschooler sort the shapes into appropriate piles. A second idea would be to have a shape scavenger hunt through the house. To do this, you will need to draw shapes on individual pieces of paper. Ask your preschooler to go throughout the house and collect items that match each shape. He can place the items on the corresponding shape.

Patterns

A pipe cleaner snake is a creative way to practice patterns. Googly eyes are not necessary, but they can be glued to one end of a pipe cleaner to help it look more like a snake. Using beads, have the preschooler use a pattern to string the beads on the pipe cleaner to make a snake. Many preschoolers will want to remove the beads and repeat with a new pattern. Legos can also be used to create patterns. A preschooler can build a tower with Legos following a pattern.

There are many different and fun math activities that will foster learning. Many of these activities can be done with supplies found around the home. A preschooler can continue to flourish and develop math skills with a bit of fun intentionality by his parents.
