Encouraging Your Preschooler to Try New Sports

sports at Kids 'R' Kids Waterside, learning academy, preschool, daycare, childcare

Not all of our preschoolers are eager to try new things, especially sports! If your child is reluctant to try new sports, know they are not alone! Lots of children are anxious when it comes to playing sports for the first time, but don’t worry, using the conversation topics below you can help encourage your child to try a new sport!

1.     Mention the Benefits

Sports and being on a team have a lot of benefits for preschoolers. They usually bring friends, new skills, and confidence along with them, not to mention a lot of fun! If you help your child see the parts of sports aside from the sport itself, they might seem less scary.

2.     Acknowledge Fears

Your child probably has very real and understandable fears about trying a new sport. They might not be good at it, they might get hurt, they might be made fun of. Help your child vocalize these fears and acknowledge that they are fair. Then, remind your child they will never know any of these things for sure if they don’t try the sport out!

3.     Talk About Safety

If your child is afraid for safety reasons, show them all the precautions athletes take to stay healthy and free from injury. Whether it is wearing a helmet or taking frequent water breaks during hot months, all children’s sports programs will take safety into account. If you can’t convince your preschooler of this, try having your child prospective coach talk about safety with them. It may seem more convincing coming from someone other than their parents.

4.     Ease Into It

Let your child try a single class or a camp before encouraging them to commit to a weekly class or season-long sport. This may seem less scary to them and help them gain confidence by trying a sport out first! If you can’t find a single class or camp, try starting the sport in your yard at home. If you can get your child to try a new sport even once, it might help them see how much they could enjoy it!

If you find your preschooler nervous about trying a new sport, use these conversation topics to help discuss the situation and encourage them! Even if they need a little push to get started, children build confidence, motor skills, and make new friends while they play sports, which is a worthwhile endeavor to pursue from a young age!
