Questions to Ask Your Preschooler Instead of, “How was your day?”

Questions to Ask Your Preschooler Instead of, “How was your day?”

Do you ever wish you could be a fly on the wall during your preschooler’s day? Do you wonder what they did in their structured time, their free play, what they talked about with their friends? If they were kind, generous, or even a little unruly? Even with the best preschool teachers and caretakers giving us as much information as they’re able, we still want to have these conversations with our kiddos.

The problem is that we often don’t get more than a shrug or a one-word answer (“fine” is a popular one). This doesn’t really give us any insight into their day! Changing how you approach the conversation about their daily activities and the methods in which you ask will give you a much more satisfying and detailed report!

For starters, don’t bombard them with questions as soon as they get home or in the car. Most preschoolers and young children may need a bit of down-time before they talk about their day. The dinner table is a good place to start!

Ask open-ended questions that will require thought and their own spin on situations and activities! Here are some great alternatives to “How was your day?”

  • What was for lunch today?
  • Who did you sit by at lunch? Who did you play with at recess?
  • Was anyone kind and generous in your class?
  • What is something new you learned today?
  • I could use a laugh! Tell me something funny that happened at school today!
  • Did you feel sad or worried at school today?
  • What made you feel great about yourself today?
  • What can you do tomorrow that will make a friend or a teacher smile?

Open the gates of communication with these great questions and you and your preschooler will have great conversations about school!
