Teaching Your Preschooler to be a Team Player

Teaching Your Preschooler to be a Team Player

Learning to be a team player is not only an important lesson for team sports, it is also necessary to be a good team player at home and at school.  Your child will discover valuable lessons while viewing their family and friends as a team.

Explain to your child how the family functions as a team, and that everyone must work together in order for your family to accomplish important tasks.  Ask your preschooler to talk about their favorite sport. For example, the football team could not function without a quarterback or receiver, and likewise, your family needs every member in order to succeed.

Encourage your child to work together with their siblings and friends.  How can they help their friends in their classroom? Help them identify ways they can be a part of the team at school!  Learning to take turns is important to learning how to interact with their peers.

Practice being a team player at home.  When you are outside, play games and activities that require each member to take turns.  Run through the sprinklers or hit the ball one at a time.

Engage in activities that require everyone to pitch in in order to succeed.  Your preschooler can pull the clothes out of the dryer while you load the clothes from the washer.  You could work with your daughter to follow the directions to put together a new Lego pattern.

Celebrate when your child helps the outcome of the task.  Remind them that you would not have been able to accomplish it without his help!  Your child will learn how important it is for everyone to pitch in and do their part!
