Your Preschooler’s Back to School Routine

Your Preschooler’s Back to School Routine

Christmas means a lot of different things for a lot of different people, but invariably it means a break from routine and from the regularly scheduled lives we live. As adults, some may like change and some may not, but at the very least people come to expect it and take it in stride. However, for your preschooler, it probably isn’t as simple as turning a page. Christmas is exciting and new every year. It means travelling and staying up too late, making it hard to return to normal life afterwards. Unfortunately, life does resume as previously scheduled, so here are some tips to help your preschooler stay afloat with the return of school.

Re-establish a Routine

Sugar has to be the bane of parents everywhere. It is a curse against normally sleepful nights and a trouble-maker with once well-behaved children. Unfortunately, sugar becomes king at Christmas, leaving parents to pick up the pieces. The biggest mistake you can make is to pretend like normal life isn’t coming back. Work, bedtime, school, and packing lunches  is all about to return. However, your schedule and your sanity are two things you can save as long as you don’t wait until the last minute. Start early! Insist on bedtimes and early mornings, and by re-establishing some semblance of normalcy, you just might make the first day back a little bit easier.

Set the Tone

Ultimately, your kids are going to feed off of you. If you are dreading going back to work and resuming previously scheduled programming, then your preschooler will definitely pick up on it and take it up another level. But if you make the most of it and remind them of all the good things about school, then you will have a rock to stand on and a standard to hold your child to. The less of a big deal you make the transition, the probability of a breakdown might just be avoidable. Christmas is a blast, yes, but hopefully these things can make post-Christmas enjoyable as well!
