Questions to Ask to Decide if Your Child is Ready for Preschool

preschool readiness

If you’re starting to think about preschool for your child, that’s probably a sign he’s ready. But if you’re not quite sure if your child has met the right milestones for going to preschool, here are a few things to consider about preschool readiness:

How does your child act around other kids his own age?

As your child interacts with other kids, observe how he responds to them. Is he afraid, does he want to join in, is he a little combative? All of these might actually be signs he’s ready for preschool. As he spends more structured time around other preschoolers, he will learn how to interact socially with children his own age.

Is your child demonstrating independence at home?

If your daughter insists she completes tasks on her own, she may be ready for preschool. If she is potty trained, learning to dress herself, and can follow a list of directions, she will probably do well in a preschool class where it is important for all the students to follow the rules.

How does your child handle transitions?

Preschool can help your child acclimate to changing activities and moving from one room to another. If you find that your child has entered a clingy stage with you, preschool will help your child learn to adjust after separation from you. Yes, the first few weeks, even months, your preschooler may cry at drop-off, but the day they walk in to their classroom on their own will be a sweet surprise!

Does your child communicate appropriately?

Can your child communicate what they need? They may not have a long list of words, but if they can let you know by pointing or signing, your child may be ready for the next stage in preschool. Time around other children who communicate well will help your little one pick up more words and understanding.

Many children will be ready for preschool around age 3 or 4, though they may not be at the same stage as their classmates. Your child’s preschool teacher will help your child to learn the things she needs to know to be successful in preschool!
