When it comes to teaching young kids why and how to give back to communities, leading by example is the most important step. Talk to your kids about why it’s important to help others and give back, and then show them how to do it. Volunteering as a family is a great way to teach kids the importance of helping others. You can look for local volunteering opportunities that are appropriate for kids, or even do something like clean up your neighborhood or help out a neighbor.
At home, have your kids help you cook dinner (or have them pretend to help).
Then take some plates of food over to a neighbor or family in need. You can collect donations for a local food bank or animal shelter. Show your kids that giving back doesn’t have to be a big production. Sometimes the simplest acts of kindness can make the biggest difference.
Helping a classmate at school, sitting with someone who’s alone at lunch, or picking up trash in your local park.
Those are all great examples of ways to give back. Encourage your kids to be creative in how they help others. Maybe they can start a lemonade stand and donate the proceeds to charity, or sell homemade crafts. Or, they can make cards for people in the hospital. There are endless possibilities!
Finally, remind your kids that giving back doesn’t always have to be about doing something for someone else.
Sometimes it’s just about being a good friend or family member. Listening to a friend who is having a tough day, lending a shoulder to cry on, or just spending quality time with someone who might be lonely are all ways to give back.
At the end of the day, talking to your kids about why giving is important, and then showing them how to do it is a strong foundation for building empathy. You’ll be amazed at how quickly they catch on, and how much joy you both can get from helping others!
