Helping Your Preschooler Grow up to be a Lifelong Reader

Helping Your Preschooler Grow up to be a Lifelong Reader at Kids 'R' Kids Tomball, preschool, daycare, childcare

Reading is a requirement for many parts of life.  Your child will surely be required to read for a majority of her schooling.  Why not start building a love for reading now and hopefully make reading and school more enjoyable for her later?

Read Daily

Take your preschooler to the library or bookstore to pick out books that spark his interest.  He is more likely to want to read and enjoy reading if the books are interesting to him and he helped choose the books.  Place the books in areas he plays so he is more apt to choose to read a book.  He may even incorporate reading into his imaginative play.

Talk about Text

Point out text to your preschooler.  This may be the word “STOP” on a sign as you’re driving to the grocery store, the name of a fast food restaurant you are passing, or the motivational plaque hanging on the wall in your hallway at home.  The point is to show your preschooler that text is all around her and it has meaning!

Rhyme with your Preschooler

Rhyming is an early literacy skill which will help your preschooler be a better reader later.  Play games where you say a word and your preschooler tells you a rhyming word or vice versa.  Singing rhyming songs or nursery rhymes are also a great way to practice this skill.

Play with Sounds and Words

Another early literacy skill is letter sound connections.  This is when your preschooler is able to connect the sound a letter makes to the letter.  You can strengthen this skill by asking what letter words begin with or asking your preschooler to provide you a word that begins with a certain letter.  For example, you may ask your preschooler what letter c-c-c-c-at starts with or to tell you a word that begins with c.

Try not to make reading or building literacy skills a chore for your preschooler.  Make it effortless and fun so he will want more.  If you’d like to read more about raising a reader, visit Scholastic’s blog for more tips!
