National Poetry Month: Teaching Your Child the Basics of Poetry

National Poetry Month: Teaching Your Child the Basics of Poetry

April is National Poetry Month and a natural time to introduce the basics of poetry to your preschooler. While they won’t be reading Shakespeare’s sonnets anytime soon, teaching them the basics of poetry will help them build the literacy needed to become a strong reader.

Rhyming

Rhyming is a big part of many types of poetry and a great way to introduce the topic to your child. A fun rhyming activity is to say a word and then go back and forth with your child saying rhyming words. This might be too difficult for some children, so you could even have your child just repeat the words as you say them. Familiar nursery rhymes are another great way to introduce rhyming! Write down the rhymes and help your child identify which words are the rhyming words.

Visual Poetry

Most preschoolers won’t be able to write a poem on their own, but they definitely can with a little help from their parents! Write a poem for your child on any subject, but leave a few words out for them to fill in. If you write a poem about your day, let the last line say something like “________ was the best part of my day!”

Acrostics

Acrostic poetry is where the first letter of each line spells out a word. Name acrostics are really good for poetry beginners. Have your child write their name out on a piece of paper, one letter on top of the other. Then, help them think of describing words that start with each letter of their name. Feel free to help them write or think of words. This activity isn’t about them writing a poem by themselves, but about exposing them to poetry!

Taking advantage of National Poetry Month and teaching your child poetry will help them build strong foundations to learn about poetry in elementary school. Even more than that, you and your child will have so much fun learning to rhyme and writing poems together.
