Getting to Know Your Preschooler’s New Teacher

new teacher

Your time with your preschooler’s new teacher may be limited as you get started at the beginning of the year. But, it is no less important to spend time getting to know your child’s teacher. This will help you stay involved in your child’s day-to-day activities and their long-term education.

1. Make sure to attend your preschool’s open house in order to meet your child’s teacher. Ask her questions about how she manages her classroom and a roomful of rambunctious preschoolers! Ask about her background and where she has taught previously. If you have time, talk about where she grew up and where she went to school. You might find you have several things in common which will help you build a great parent/teacher relationship.

2. If you drop your child off early during extended care, you may not have an opportunity to see your child’s teacher each day. Take time every few weeks to drop off later or pick up earlier so you have a chance to talk with your child’s teacher to get honest feedback about your child’s progress. If there are things you are concerned about, take this time to pass your thoughts along. Be mindful that your child’s teacher is on the job. If you need more than a minute to talk, schedule a meeting so you can sit down uninterrupted.

3. Go to class parties attend and parent/teacher conferences. Classroom parties give you a chance to interact with your preschooler’s teacher in a more relaxed environment. This opens up the chance to get to know your child’s teacher more personally. At parent/teacher conferences, go in expecting to receive honest and helpful feedback about your child’s education.

Keep in mind, the relationship with your child’s teacher will only last ten months before its time to begin a new parent/teacher relationship. You may not interact with your child’s teacher every day, but your child spends many hours each day with their teacher. It is integral to your child’s education to have an honest relationship with your child’s teacher.
