For young children, gift-giving can seem confusing—especially when so much focus is placed on receiving. But when we help preschoolers slow down and think about why we give, we teach them that gifts are most special when they come from the heart.

• Make a photo collage for a sibling or caregiver. Let your preschooler choose photos that bring back happy memories and help them arrange them on a page. Add drawings, stickers, or captions to make it even more special and personalized.
• Pick a favorite toy or book to donate to someone in need. Talk about how sharing something they love can help another child feel happy and loved. This act of giving teaches empathy and shows that kindness comes in many forms.
• Write a short poem or song with help from a grown-up. Let your preschooler come up with silly rhymes or sweet lyrics about friendship, family, or fun. Then, perform it together or write it down as a special gift from the heart.

You don’t need to spend money to make someone feel loved. The thought, effort, and connection are what matter.

Preschoolers may need help understanding how to think about others when giving. Role-playing can help! Try saying, “Let’s pretend you’re giving a gift to your teacher. What do you think she would love?” Let them explore ideas and offer suggestions gently.
