The Importance of a Daily Routine with Your Preschooler

While routines can be extremely difficult even for parents, it’s important to teach your preschooler what a daily routine is, why it is important, and how to stick to one.

Start with a chart

To keep things simple, start with a chart or list that your preschooler can mark off every day to feel a sense of accomplishment. Include things they already do on a daily basis to avoid them feeling overwhelmed. Then, feel free to add new tasks, or even activities they want to practice every day like crafts or sports!

It will be helpful to explain why a routine is important and what skills you need to keep one. For example, define what discipline means and how that skill can help them both now and in the future!

Try different routines

A routine can include anything from brushing teeth to picking up toys to reading to eating meals. It’s ok to try different routines until you find one that makes both your and your preschooler’s day run more smoothly.

Explaining why a routine is important will build vital developmental skills and boost their mental health, self esteem, and sense of accomplishment on a daily basis!

It’s ok to miss some days, or forget some tasks, so let your preschooler make some mistakes. A routine should make your preschooler feel safe and prepared for the day, and as in all things—practice makes perfect!
