One of the most rewarding experiences for both you and your preschooler can be giving back to your community together. By working together on projects and volunteering your time, you can teach your child the importance of helping others while also bonding as a family. Here are five ways you and your preschooler can give back to your community together:
Donate Toys and Clothing
One easy way to declutter your home and help those in need is to donate unwanted toys, clothes, and baby gear to a local donation center. This is a great activity for young children as they can help sort through their old things and decide what to give away. If you don’t have anything to donate, consider organizing a neighborhood toy drive or clothing swap.
Collect Food for the Food Bank
Many families struggling with poverty or food insecurity rely on food banks to make ends meet. You and your child can help by starting a food drive in your neighborhood or collecting donations from friends and family. Most food banks accept non-perishable items like canned goods, cereal, pasta, peanut butter, etc. Check with your local food bank for specific needs before collecting donations.
Volunteer at a Local Soup Kitchen or Homeless Shelter
Soup kitchens and homeless shelters are always in need of volunteers, especially during the holiday season. You and your child can volunteer together to serve meals or sort donations. This is a great way to directly help those in need while also teaching your child about compassion and empathy. Contact local shelters in advance to find out their volunteer requirements (age minimums, etc.).
Help Out at a Local Senior Center
Many seniors enjoy having visitors, especially younger ones! You and your child can volunteer together at a local senior center or nursing home by reading books aloud, leading arts and crafts projects, or simply chatting with residents. This is a great way to make new friends while also brightening someone’s day. Contact local senior centers in advance to find out about their volunteer opportunities.
Clean Up Your Neighborhood Park
Your child probably loves playing at the park, so why not give back by helping to keep it clean? You can organize a neighborhood park cleanup day and recruit friends and family to help. This is a great way to get outside and teach your child the importance of taking care of our shared public spaces.
