Back-to-School Tips for Your Preschooler

Back-to-School Tips for Your Preschooler at Kids 'R' Kids Suwanee, preschool, daycare, childcare

Back-to-school time can be a bit overwhelming and scary for both parents and preschoolers. It comes with some unknowns, new faces, and new experiences. Below are a few tips on making this back-to-school season more successful!

Talk about It

Open conversation about returning to school with your preschooler through reading books about going to school. Pretend play is also a great way to get a conversation started with your preschooler. Invite her to play school with you or create a school for her stuffed animals and dolls. Talk to her about the new adventures she has the opportunity to experience, such as new friends and fun activities with her classmates. Make note of any questions she has which you do not know the answer to and assure her you will work on finding the answers.

Meet the Teacher and Staff

Most schools will host a meet the teacher event. Attending this event with your preschooler may help reduce some of your preschooler’s anxiety about the beginning of the school year. In addition to meeting their teacher, tour the school with your preschooler so they have a chance to see where they will spend the day. They will be much more comfortable seeing the large cafeteria or playground with a familiar person.

Familiarize Yourself

Familiarize yourself with the school policies and rules. Make note of any events or dates the school is closed to make planning easier and avoid the panic of last minute surprises. Create a plan for drop-off and pick-up in accordance with the school’s procedures and share this plan with your preschooler. They will feel less anxious knowing how and who will be involved in dropping them off and picking them up from school.

Routine

A routine is important for children. If your preschooler does not have a set bedtime and waking routine, now is a great time to start one. Routines help children feel safe by letting them know what to expect. Routines also help signal to your preschooler’s brain when it is time to relax and prepare for a restful night of sleep. A morning routine will help mornings go smoother and help start each day off on the right foot for your preschooler. It can also be helpful to create a routine of what to do when your preschooler returns home from school (i.e. where to put her backpack and lunchbox) to help keep items organized and ready to go the next school day.
